If you recall your order of operations, you know that exponents are pretty high on the list of things you need to take care of when solving a problem. In fact only grouping operations like parenthesis really trump exponents in terms of what you should do first.

The general case when you need to multiply two values with exponents is to simply expand them out and continuing solving your problem using the typical order of operations steps.

However, exponents and some of the properties of multiplication can be used to simplify some special cases… Which means those familiar order of operations steps can be bypassed in favor of some exponential trickery if you know the right rules.

It’s kind of like cutting in line, just a mathematically ethical sort of way.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to multiplying exponents, but the posts below will help you see when and where some of these exponent tricks can be used. Read on to find out more!
